چکیده

From catastrophic natural disasters to the threats our college students face, there has been a heightened demand for Mass Notification Systems (MNS) that provide clear, concise and intelligible voice messages that communicate how people should respond in an emergency. Manmade or natural, the magnitude and diversity of today’s threats have influenced the federal government and other organizations to create regulatory codes for Mass Notification and Emergency Communication Systems, including voice intelligibility requirements for these Life Safety systems to be effective. International, European and North American fire alarm codes now require that voice evacuation systems meet minimum levels of speech intelligibility.

Do Children Require More High-Frequency Audibility than Adults with Similar Hearing Losses?

Speech cannot be understood if it cannot be heard. Therefore, audibility is undoubtedly a major goal of amplification for children and adults with hearing loss. In restoring audibility, it is often assumed that the listener can extract speech cues over the entire range of speech frequencies. This assumption is true for a person with mild to moderate hearing losses, but is not true when hearing ...

Integrating the acoustics of running speech into the pure tone audiogram: a step from audibility to intelligibility and disability.

BACKGROUND/AIMS The aim of the present study is to construct a simple method for visualizing and quantifying the audibility of speech on the audiogram and to predict speech intelligibility. The proposed method involves a series of indices on the audiogram form reflecting the sound pressure level distribution of running speech. The indices that coincide with a patient's pure tone thresholds refl...

Cepstral and linear prediction techniques for improving intelligibility and audibility of impaired speech

Human speech becomes impaired i.e., unintelligible due to a variety of reasons that can be either neurological or anatomical. The objective of the research was to improve the intelligibility and audibility of the impaired speech that resulted from a disabled human speech mechanism with impairment in the acoustic system-the supra-laryngeal vocal tract. For this purpose three methods are presente...

Speech Intelligibility and the Detection of Auditory Alarms and Warnings in Noisy Industrial Environments

Issues affecting speech intelligibility and audibility/detectability of auditory displays in the industrial workplace will be presented. Topics will include design guidelines, standards, and relevant research from the literature. Examples of experimental results will be presented from research conducted in Virginia Tech’s Auditory Systems Laboratory.

Estimating the Performance of Sound Restoration Hearing Protectors by Using the Speech Intelligibility Index

Despite advances in engineering noise controls and the use of administrative controls, miners are still dependent on hearing protection devices for prevention of noise-induced hearing loss. However, miners often raise concerns about the audibility of spoken communication when wearing conventional hearing protectors. Electronic technologies that selectively process and restore sounds from outsid...
